Song-Poems are not poetry set to music. It was a form of releasing performed music by amateur composers where by they could avoid paying publishers by calling them “Song-Poems” rather than “songs”. Companies would run ads in newspapers and magazines for people to submit their songs, and then the company (Usually located in NYC or LA) would hire studio musicians and talented (but relatively unknown) vocalists to perform the best compositions. They would then attempt to sell the LP to every person who had submitted a song, and the songwriter would have to purchase it to see if their song made the cut, which it usually did not. Some of these companies were accused of taking the very best amateur songs and, instead of releasing them on the LPs, they would have them published under their own names and then sold to established groups and singers. There are numerous record collectors who collect these Song-Poem releases searching for the rare gems.
BELOW ARE EXAMPLES OF THE TYPES OF SONG-POEM RECORDS I’M LOOKING FOR. IF YOU HAVE THESE OR OTHERS BY THESE ARTISTS PLEASE EMAIL ME! John Heneghan jheneghan8@gmail.com
